On siinä Sarumanilla ihmettelemistä.

Anteeksi hieman OT.

LotR Grand Tournament 2005, Seminar Report

The Seminar

Introduction

For some reason, this was one of the most laid back seminar’s that I’ve been to, people interrupting, when something appropriate/relevant came up, adding to the seminar. Most likely due to it being the Grand Tournament.

The seminar’s introduction began, Brian Anderson told us where the fire exits were (or as he put it, the fire works…slip of the tongue I’d guess, which got rapturous laughter). After this, he handed over to Adam, for the major part of the seminar.

Adam began by explaining that the seminar which he was to show us was the same that GW US had done at Games Days there recently (Atlanta anyone?), and that we should feel privileged, because usually Games Days seminars are far more in depth, look far more into the future, and have a larger audience, so generally are not to be repeated at smaller event seminars (like GT’s, with only 78 (76 really, two being Alessio and Adam) in attendance, and not everyone going to the seminar). So due to the nature of the seminar, he asked strictly for no photo’s, which was adhered to by all. (And thus there are no photos of any sneak peaks, or any photos for that matter in this article).

Scouring of the Shire

The first thing which came up on the slide show was the Scouring of the Shire, which I think we all know enough about, yet with it being the US GD copy of the seminar, at the time SotS wouldn’t have been out, or would have just been released, and so would probably have been relevant. Adam still went into a bit of comic detail of what the Scouring of the Shire is, detail how (all in one breath);
The Hobbits go away to destroy the ring, Saruman (now known as Sharkey) goes and gets vengeance on them, by going to their homes, ransacking the place and when they come back they find their homes a mess, and so organise a fighting force against him, and eventually they “Thwack Sharkey”, and get their homes back.
Adam also talked about how the gaming world has received SotS, and as yet, it has all been good news for SotS. He detailed, that the main reason for this good feed back being the very small scale of the battles and thus are quick to play and yet it still gives a very good representation of what happened, keeping it true to Tolkien. He then had a ‘jab’ at Mat Ward, (who wasn’t present), saying that if Mat had, had anything to with the rules for SotS, chances are all the Hobbits would have died by the end of the second scenario in the linked scenario’s in SotS. As we know, Mat has an ‘inventive’ streak (*cough*History of Harad*cough*) in him, and so, this could possibly lead him away from being true to Tolkien?

Mines of Moria

On the next slide of the Seminar, was the Mines of Moria box (MoM). The introduction which he gave to this was not totally comical, but relevant, in that, he mentioned he followed some of the larger fan sites on the web (wonder which one he might be on about ), and that he had seen the reaction caused when the picture of the box was released;

Fan site: “Ooooh look!!! There’s a box with ‘Mock Up’ on it, WOW!”
Adam: “Yeh, that’s exactly what it is, a Mock Up.”

After this somewhat humorous introduction Adam continued the seminar along two routes simultaneously, one being with MoM, and the other being LOTR V2.0 – this being due to, so I have deduced them being released at the (relative) same time.

With the MoM box set he said that this would be something similar to the Battle of Macragge box set that GW have done for 40K, where this being, you get starting forces and the basic rules, but also that it will contain some unique to the MoM book, scenarios depicting the fellowships journey through Moria. Although it would be very Beginner orientated, it would also appeal the avid collector. He also went into some detail of what new minis we can be expecting in the box set, and as perceived thing such as Plastic Cave Trolls, and newly sculpt plastic Fellowships are a definite (Anyone fancy a Frying Pan?), however, unfortunately GW having spun another money maker, the plastic and newly sculpted fellowship won’t be available separately… Also contained within will be MoM box only scenery, this being a Well, Balin’s Tomb (not the one done through BGiME), and other forms of rubble.

At this stage, Adam further reinforced how LOTR is definately the 3rd core system (even more than usual). He said that it would be likely that the MoM box set would/could even end up being sold by such shops as WHSmiths (and I would guess Wal-Mart in the US), and that this way it would get even more ‘new blood’ into the hobby, keeping the GW LOTR line up there with the other two main games.

Following this, Adam also said that it was more than likely that there would be Two Towers and Return of the King equivalents of the MoM box set, being released periodically. One thing which was said, toward the end of this section of the seminar however was that, the MoM release itself was called a Supplement, where as it would have otherwise been guessed not being a supplement, and so it is reasonable to presume that this will take the place of the Shadows in the East (SitE) supplement.

MoM – September 05
SitE – March 06
Two Towers Equiv. of MoM – September 06
'Mirkwood' – March 07
RotK Equiv. – September 07

The above being my own conclusions of the possible future supplement release structure. (Obviously, that being said, it could quite easily be wrong).
With regards to the mini starter sets is that, GW want to make the game as fully explored as possible and so we should; “Expect some Awesome stuff!”

New ‘Super Rule Book’

The other route which he was simultaneously taking, was the new 244 paged ‘Super Rule Book’, similar to the 40K hard back book, which would contain ALL the current rules including siege rules, siege engines….everything! The up-to-date rules, with grey area’s being ironed out and a major stats/points over-hall. The one main, noted, rule overhaul is on Courage – more on this later.
A said example was that heavy armour would now cost three points, and elven bows/cross bows would be costing three points, with normal bows being two points and such like. Yet the restructuring would be such that armies that we have already bought from GW wouldn’t be affected in structure, just in points. Another likely given example was that High Elves and Wood Elves, will be stuck together as a Generic ‘Elves’, as to why nothing was said, but I guess it saves half a page in the book. The book would also contain a lot more new scenario’s (though not the ones in the MoM book and such like).
This book would basically make all previous books obsolete, but it would also have a large stock of new stuff for us to get out teeth into. This being (along with the MoM box set) the beginning of making the LOTR range as full as possible!

Shadows in the East & ‘Mirkwood’

Next Adam moved onto the next two confirmed supplements, these being “The Shadows in the East”, and ‘Mirkwood’. Mirkwood doesn’t yet have a confirmed name, but it is based around Elves, and so, for the time being ‘Mirkwood’ is the generic title given to it.

Shadows in the East, quite obviously is to do with Easterlings and exploring their history. This would introduce even more exotic troop types, such as (possibly) Wain Riders, and Chariots. We should also be expecting some Easterling bowmen (finally!). These of course will be plastic, which means we’re all be going to get our hands on reasonably cheap Easterling armies in the near future! (YEY! ) It was also suggested that we could, possibly, maybe, hopefully, might be seeing a Khamul character!

As Mirkwood is to be released farther into the future, there was less said about it, but then again there was a lot left unsaid, in which we can look at numerous possibilities for what may be coming our way soon!

Adam said that one of the main focuses for ‘Mirkwood’ would be Dol Guldor, and its sieging, with reference to the Necromancer and the White Council. Thus this would mean that we could be having more in-depth (possibly new stat lines) characters for the Council, (the White Council being, Galadriel, Elrond, Gandalf, Saruman, Celeborn, Other Elven lords (Glorfindel types) and maybe some new characters too). This would also mean that we would most definately be having Saruman as an official ‘good character’. Also, a Necromancer character (obviously). This in turn led to a possible name for the Supplement being: “Follow the Necromancer” was one possibility that Adam suggested for the supplement – this could also be a part of the Supplement, much like ‘The War of the Ring’ in the RotK rule book. Further more, Men of Dale, and King Brand will possibly be explored, which also gives us another possible name for the Supplement. ‘Of Dale and Mirkwood’, would seem to be a reasonable possibility IMHO.

Confirmed things for this supplement however, are Plastic Wood Elves. They may not necessarily be any specific Wood Elf – Lothlorien/Mirkwood, but just your bog standard ‘Wood Elf’ rather than Lothlorien Elf, for example. Another confirmed item we will be seeing in the supplement is Spiders. Other than the 8 legged kind what type of spiders we are going to be getting nothing was said. It was also revealed that it is likely that we will be seeing Beorn, and the Beornings also in this supplement. Later on in the seminar, however, it was revealed that this supplement is going to ‘dodgy’ with regards to the licensing, due to the possibility of the Hobbit Film, being made.

The Unimportant bit…

After this the seminar moved onto the less important areas (we all know that LOTR is the most important game of all!) of GW, namely, 40K, and WHFB. At this part of the seminar, I decided to pretend to fall to sleep and have a good snore, which made Adam, Alessio and Dave (Hithero – who was sitting next to me) chuckle.

Basically, for any one who’s interested, in the 40K universe, lots of new Tyranid stuff is coming out, with a few nice re-sculpts. They’re also becoming more deadly in combat, their “getting faster”. In the fantasy realm, the Wood Elves are on the horizon, but at the moment the focus is on Lustria, with lots of stuff planned for Skaven, Lizardmen, the Empire, and a few extra’s for the High Elves.

The Questions

At this point the Seminar came to its end, and was handed over to us, the viewers, to start asking all of the questions! Before the first question, however, Brian Aderson had a little to say. This, in a nut shell was;

“We will continue to support LOTR for years and years to come, it isn’t going anywhere. Even though many feel it’s on its way out, we know that we have established a core fan base for the game, and due to that, the game shall continue, for as long as you, the gamer, wants it.”

(It can also be presumed that GW will continue to support LotR, so long as it has a worth while profit margin to do so). He then continued to divulge that there are 2 dates planned for LOTR campaign weekend’s, which reinforced his previous sentiments.

The first question of the Seminar was with reference to future LotR tournaments, and although directed at Alessio and Adam, they were able to pass the question on to Brian, who was able to give us an answer. He said that he, and Nick Appleby, had been recently working on the possibility (almost certainty) of LotR doubles tournaments for next year. This is always good to hear, but we’re never sure till we see it in the pages of WD or on the net. This being due to, the same being said last year, yet as far as we know, there are no LotR doubles tournaments planned for this year – and if there is, GW are doing a sterling job of keeping it under raps.

Another very interesting question that was asked, was with regards to the expansion of the Battle of five Armies, and other large scale battles being put in 15 mm. It was suggested that such battles as the Battle of Pelennor Fields, and other large battles could very well be put into 15 mm, but this will depend on licensing agreements with Tolkien Ent. as should be expected.

The following question of this was with regards to some of the previously noted rules changes that we can come to expect with the new, ‘Big Book of Rules’. Namely it was with regards to the cavalry rules. Simply, you choose who attacks, the mount of the rider. Alessio went into some detail of that if you watch any kind of war film with cavalry, the mounts attack, often with the rider doing very little – (Look at the Charge of the Rohirrim in the RotK film, for the most part the horse just runs over the Orcs…). A given example was a charging Warg rider, should the rider win the combat, the player could choose to attack with the Warg, giving a stinking 4, strength 4 attacks! Further due to this, should a mount have a fight vale (i.e. Not 0), and the rider is killed, the mount can take a courage test, if the test is passed, the mount can stay on the battle field as if it were a normal rank and file troop. This then immediately raised questions with regards to the points value of cavalry, but Warg riders in particularly. Fair to say, their point cost will be going up adequately.

Other rule changes include such things as, Volley Fire will be requiring a minimum of 10 archers, rather than the 6 that is currently needed, and that the opponent (the person not firing) chooses the first model hit. (The controlling player nominates their desired target as usual still).

A Major rule change is based around the Courage rules. The ‘All on his own’ test has been deleted and a new Courage rule has been introduced. Should you fail a courage test, once your army has been reduced to less than 50% of its starting numbers then that model is removed immediately as a casualty. (This is mainly due to the fact, that once a model fails a Courage test, it runs away once or twice and for the next 8 turns it could just run backwards and forwards over the same 6” of board – and in reality this wouldn’t happen. Once you start running, you don’t stop!) Also, another reason this rule will be introduced is because, of a speed factor of the game, it will make them a lot quicker, and so, in some ways better and more strategic games to play, however, to counter these new disadvantages for rank and file troops, heroes have gained a few advantages. Will can now be used to affect Courage tests – Will now has a use other than magic!!! It can be used in the same way as Might, but ONLY for Courage tests. You can also use it in conjunction with Might (You could use 2 Will and 1 Might to pass a courage test if needs be, for example). This means that heroes will be able to last just that little bit longer in a fight, and also, they will be able to hold your army together due to all heroes Stand Fast ability. It just makes those with 12” Stand Fast’s all the more deadly. Also due to the introduction of his rule, nothing will have Courage 8 – Bezerkers being the said example, of now ‘only’ having Courage

An intriguing question was also asked about other re-sculpts of the Fellowship (other than the plastic one which we will be getting in the Fellowship of the Ring starter), and the simple is; “there very well might be one”. Which means, there's just as much chance as there being one, and not being one - or at least that's what I think it means.

Another question was asked with regards to other supplements other than the ones discussed in the Seminar, and the answer came back that the next one after ‘Mirkwood’ is likely to be based on Dwarves. Suggested names for it at the present time being something along the lines of; “Durin’s Folk” or “The Iron Hills” (Plastic Dwarves maybe???). Adam then said that for the evil part of this supplement it is likely to be Drakes of varying forms and such like. (Smaug? Again would most likely to depend on licensing (my view)).
(Next followed a very weird comment). In response to this revelation of Drakes, one person in the audience said that they knew Tolkien, himself, and that his parents were very close friends with him, and so he knew that Drakes weren’t an idea of Tolkien’s, and so shouldn’t be done. At this there was complete silence…more so at the fact that the young boy knows Tolkien personally (is it me, or has Prof. Tolkien been dead some years??? And I’m pretty sure he came up with the concept of Drakes too. Infact…VOTE FOR THIS ARTICLE IF YOU THINK THIS BOY IS INSANE ), rather than the statement that Drakes shouldn’t be done.

Someone quickly thought up a question at this point, to allow us all to move on (Thankfully!) And it was a very good question IMHO. It was with reference to what new models will be done, and he gave a wealthy list of items that he would like to see, including; un-mounted Knights of Gondor, Rangers of the North, without (metal) armour, Ents, and Elven Cavalry.
Adam and Alessio then took explained each one at a time. Un-mounted knights, are not likely to be done, (for the foreseeable future anyway, as it was actually the first time that someone had brought up the problem with them) due to the fact that they can be converted (although not easily. Though several quick examples were given of how you can convert them). When someone asked, will they now be considered, the answer was, yes, but it will mean that something else would have to be put on hold. So it would really depend on us, and how much we want them, as to when they get done.
Rangers of the North without armour will/are being done, and shall be released in the relatively near future.
Ents and Elven Cavalry were answered as one. The fact of the matter with these it that so much revolves around the licensing, so it will depend greatly on that, but (lets imagine) if the license wasn’t a problem, it would be very likely that they will be done. The ‘plastic people’ are also keen on doing them (the Ents), and the technology is now available to do Ents, though it is expensive. The plastic moulding technologies are advancing at a great rate at the present, and so they’re almost certainly to be done at some time, dependant on the license. If the license is sorted soon, Ents may play a role in the ‘Mirkwood’ Supplement. Elven Cavalry will most likely feature in a TLA supplement, when it’s done. (When it is to be done is not yet even known by the studio… but it will be).

One of the final questions that were asked was with regards to separate weapons sprue’s for such things as conversions. The answer came, what can be done will be. This too depends on licensing, which is unfortunate, but we have to live with it. Adam did reassure us though, that the Sculptors/Plastics People/GW always try to fit on as much as possible to the sprue to allow for conversion and such like. The example he gave being the Orc Warg sprue, where as the Easterling sprue has little in the way of ‘extras’ due to the physical size of the Easterlings themselves.

The final question came, “What miniature would you do, if you could do anything”, and from Adam and Alessio, two answer’s came – one of which we’ve already got. Hobbits! And, something which would be really impressive if they could be done, Corsair Ships! (If they can do a Mumak, they might as well try and do an entire boat!).

With that the seminar ended, everyone applauded, got up and walked back up to Bugman’s for food!

Löysin tämän TLA:sta :

One Game to rule them all
Rules Changes:
Courage: Will can be used, if you fail a courage test you´re removed from the table
Volley Fire: No you need at least 10 Archers. The to-hit system is new/changed.
Some Troops+heroes will get changes in their profiles. Note that Lurtz and the Witchking stay the same (@Adam- I don´t want the WK to be the fighting machine, I want him to be a better wizzard than the ordinary ringwraiths. Yes I know that he has loads of will. But I´d have liked to see a special spell or something).
Some spells will be changed, e.g. it will no longer be possible to command a miniature off his horse and lay it down to the ground.
In the new rulebook there are all rules+profiles.
All miniatures will have hand weapons, only Grima and Galadriel stay unarmed.
Adam said that the new rulebook would be the best they´ve ever produced, even better than the new 40k rulebook.

GW is filling up holes like Goblin Captains and so on.

Supplements
The Shadows in the east (not sure about the name) 1/2006
The Fall of the Necromancer 3/2006

The Shadows of the East bring us plastic easterlings, new heroes(and new heroetypes), some stuff for Gondor, Dwarves and a 3rd good army.
Easterlings DO NOT have chariots- but Adam said that there would be some!
There will be Variags of Khand (probably those have the chariots.)
Plastic Easterlings "look amazing", they have shields, spears, hellebeards and bows.
There´ll probably be Khamul the Easterling, unfortunately I forgot to ask about Pallando and Allatar, the blue wizzards.

We didn´t hear anything new on the fall of the necromancer. plastic wood elves, mirkwood spiders, ...

The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers

This will be 2 scenario books in which you can fight your way through movie and book. From Hobbiton to Amon Hen, 18scenarios. Painting guides for all needed miniatures and terrain guides for all needed terrain! Especially for beginners who want to go on with the hobby after "Mines of Moria".
TTT: Adam has just started with this one.

The reason for the plastic MoM Legolas having a bow is that this set is for beginners. And beginners think of Legolas firing a bow.
There´ll be another (metall) fellowship- Legolas fighting with 2 knifes,(probably)Aragorn with a bow.
There will (probably) be a metal cave troll who has his hammer above his head with 2 hands holding it.
