Once upon a time, there was a little girl. She was very special. Indeed, VERY special. She was born to a merchant’s family, her father a rich man, rarely at home. Her mother was a lady, respected in the parties of the rich folks. She was not what you would consider as a good mother. The girl was mostly raised by the many nannies that came one after another.

Probably before the age of three, years before it was usual, she showed some unusual powers. Of course many people never had any special powers, but she most certainly did. It all began by some small objects falling down from places she couldn’t have reached. At first nobody suspected anything, she was just way too young to do any magic. When some items begun to heat up and the small fires started to appear, there really was no other explanation. She was very curious about everything, and creative in inventing new tricks she could do to the unsuspecting nannies. Despite the very good money her mother paid to them, none of the them lasted very long. Around the time the girl turned five, there was no more nannies willing to take care of her in the city of 100 000 people, and her mother had to give in to the pleas of the wizard school and she let the girl go in there.

She was very young to start the school, usually they accepted only someone seven or eight years old. There she was, the very little girl in her pale blue dress, all alone, knocking on the huge door of the wall surrounding the mysterious school. After a while, a small hatch opened: “Ah, we’ve been waiting for you,” was said, before she could get a word from her mouth. The door opened with an appropriately loud creak. The gate keeper looked just as appropriate for his task: a huge, scarred and hairy man, with a simple armor and a big sword. “You see there, over the courtyard, is that tall building. Go through the front door, there is someone waiting for you.”

On the other side of the courtyard was a great big tree, the biggest one she had ever seen. Behind it was a building with big expensive glass windows. (She was young, but she knew that much.) She smiled quietly to the big man and started to walk to the big tree, looking around at the same time. She really liked trees, but there was not many in the city. There was some small groups doing some exercises, she could feel the ripples and see the shadow in the ground. To get a better sense of what was happening, she stopped and closed her eyes. She never had liked to use the power of the sun, even if it was very easy. She had never liked how the sun seemed to dim and everything seemed to be in shade. She extended her hands to the her sides and embraced the warmth of the surroundings. She begun to draw it in from all around her. Not too much too near though, she didn’t want to get cold.

She opened her eyes and used the power inside of her to watch more closely what the others were doing. She continued towards the tree, trying to figure out what they were doing. As far as she knew, they were just spinning some sand around in the air in front of them. “Well, that is easy,” she thought.

Still walking, she drew some more power from the surrounding heat, and made a small whirlwind in front of her. It was very easy, as she had suspected. She drew some more energy from the air and from the ground below her, channeling it to the ever growing tornado. It seemed, that heating the lower part of it made it almost spin on it’s own. The wind made her hair whirl on her face, but she was so entranced by the sheer size of the thing, she didn’t even notice. She wanted to make it even bigger, and opening up to a new energy source, the gravity. There is a drawback though, in using gravity, as you can imagine.

As she drew in the energy of gravity all around her, she could feel the energy sizzling in her fingers and toes. She fed the energy to the great whirlwind, covering her eyes from the flying sand and rocks. In the lighter gravity, the spiraling wind soared up, trying to pull the girl in. Suddenly she realized what she had done: she couldn’t control it anymore, and she already was very close to the tree and the building. At the same moment the weakness hit her. She didn’t feel the nausea or headache that people usually felt when closing on the edge of their powers, it was just there. The air was already full of leaves. She felt her knees hitting the ground as her vision darkened. She heard someone yelling, and the sound of the breaking glass. The last thing in her mind before the back of her head hit the ground was: “I hope the tree will survive!”

When she opened her eyes, she had a big bump on her head. She was in a bed with white linen sheets. Through the window she could see the tree. It had lost most of it’s leaves, but it seemed to be still alive. In spite of the pounding headache, a smile sneaked to her face. “That was not a good start at the new school.”
